Can't Remove LAG and Slogging Gameplay in Final Fantasy XIV Follow

#1 Jan 20 2016 at 1:21 PM Rating: Decent
I recently downloaded the trial version of Final Fantasy XIV and I am loving the game except that it is becoming almost unplayable due to the constant lag and slow response rate. It sort of looks as if my character is running through mud and all the responses are relatively slow. I have read through a bunch of threads on this and I have done just about everything I could to fix it including running wtfast, plugging in directly and modifying my network device.

A speed test says I'm getting 29mb/s and wtfast says 57ms and 210ms with wtfast. I am running windows 10 on a PC with an AMD A8-6410 APU with AMD Radeon R5 Graphics 2 ghz. It has 8 GB of Memory

Any help or insight would be much appreciated!

We need to first determine if we're talking about latency or not ("lag" is a widely misunderstood and misused term). If wtfast is seriously giving you 210ms latency then I wouldn't use it... because that's awful unless you're on the Moon or something. 57ms is acceptable.. a little high but it shouldn't be a big problem.

While I'm not super familiar with ATI graphics cards, from what I can find your's seems pretty weak. You probably can't play the game on max settings with it and trying to do that anyway is going to result in serious framerate issues. I'd say try turning your graphics down and seeing if that helps any to see if that's part of your problem.

Yeah, looking at this:

The R5s seem pretty far down the list.

The recommended graphic card when this game launched a couple years ago was an Nvidia 560ti. That's what I had in my build (along with an Ivy-bridge i5, no need for anything more fancy), and I could play 60 FPS at 720p/very high settings. I could play 1080/max with that card, but I dropped down to the 30-45 FPS range more often.

Looking at the hierarchy, equal AMD cards to the 560ti would be: HD 4850 X2, 5870, 6950, R7 260X. You have to look down several tiers to find an R5 card.

I'm guessing that's your problem.

For what it's worth, though, my laptop also has a very weak graphic card, but the game is still playable on the lowest-possible setting with many graphic detail settings turned down or off. It's not optimal, but it's great for when I want to sit on the couch and watch football while I play.

My latency used to be 700 ms :) It was super fun to play FFXIV in, that's for sure.

Get off the Moon! Seriously where were you playing from to get that kind of latency and not just get disconnected outright?

Satellite internet---so technically it wasn't that far off playing on the moon, haha, since the signals had to bounce to space and back. It was pretty rough and very frustrating. I only did things on bard so I could move a tiny bit later and only with friends, and even then it was miserable to feel like I pulled down the team every time until I memorized fights.
