Dragon Age III: InquisitionFollow

A text-based adventure titled "Dragon Age: The Last Court" has been announced for free release through the Keep. It isn't out yet, but with the game being released in two weeks odds are good that it should be available soon. It's sort of a "Choose your own adventure" deal that discusses some of what has been happening between DA2 and DA:I. Failbetter Games (the developer) has this to say:

Edit: Read on the forums that DA:TLC's choices will have at least one effect on DA:I. No information on how large of a difference it makes - could easily just be some extra text.

Doing quite a bit better on my second attempt. I got through all 20 turns without losing, and at the end I've got DFP between 20 and 50, and PTR between 10-30. Freedom is the only one a bit low for my tastes, and rumors of revolution is a bit high but I chose it as my weakness. Managed to trade my clues primarily for cunning, and took the abbess as my counselor (and perhaps eventually my lover?). Also managed to get some additional stats in cunning, Woods-wise, and one more in rulership.

Now I'm stuck waiting several hours until I have my turns back Smiley: lol

After a few more hours I used up some more turns... Dignity seems like the currency I really want, as I need Trophies and that would help. I have Prosperity at 100, which I COULD trade for Viands, but there's no point, right? I also have three Secrets... which does me a whole lot of no good. Other than that I'm sitting pretty. PTR all under 20.

I managed to get my Cunning up to 42, unbuffed, which is nice. Once I get over 50 I'll take a crack at the Chantry door.

Also learned a bit more about the game:

First, you have 7 days (Identified as Market Days) until the game ends. I think you lose if you don't have the 3 items (Viands, Secrets, or Trophies) decided upon at the beginning of the game; a "good ending" requires 15, and the best requires 30. Each Market Day is 24 hours, and the first cards drawn that day have better yields than most. You have a maximum of 20 Action Points, and they replenish at a rate of 1 per 20 minutes. That means you get a maximum of 72 new Action Points per day. You can also buy Dawn with real money, which I believe gives you more.

You have 6 stats: Health, Rulership, Scholarship, Derring-do, Woods-wise, and Cunning. The scholar I believe gets a boost to Rulership (40) and Scholarship (50); the Huntress gets boosts to Derring-do (50) and Woods-wise (40).

You have three city stats, Dignity, Freedom, and Prosperity (DFP). You can boost one of these at the beginning of the game; both can choose Prosperity, the Huntress can boost Dignity, and the Scholar can boost Freedom. If any (one? two?) of these fall to 0, you lose. Many actions will automatically take -2 from one of these stats; be VERY careful when they're below 10.

You have three city dangers: Peril, Twilight, and Rumors of Revolution (PTR). You choose one to be boosted at the beginning. If you get over 75 in any of these you can only draw two new cards at a time instead of 3; if you get to 100 and fail to pass a challenge, you lose.

There are several currencies:
Clues: The most basic, most actions will give you an option to get between 4-10 of these. Better than a sharp stick to the fanny. They can be used for lots of things, including training stats.
Bag of Royals: Your ruler's personal currency. Useful for buying favors from some companions, and involved in several options usually for heightened rewards. If your rulership is high you can get them by using 3 actions to levy taxes. Also a reward from one of the Glass card options (though last time I had the card come up, the BoR reward option was locked. Might be because my DFP were too low?)
Authority: Used to summon companions without waiting for their card to show up. Also used for some quests and to get some favors. I've seen it as a quest reward a few times and I haven't needed too much yet.
Favors: Each character who can be a companion has favors. You use 2 to promote them as a companion (Counselor, Lover, Accomplice, Bodyguard), and you can use additional ones to get good rewards from the characters. They're usually pretty pricey; the Silent Huntsman, for example, requires a Trophy, and the Dowager requires 5 Bags of Royals. The Outlaw does a hefty amount of damage to your city stats.
Viands, Secrets, and Trophies (VST): The currency that measures how well you're doing in your game. Not yet sure if you're locked into one type at the end or can mix-and-match for a better ending.

Second, you have companions. Most importantly, they give a +20 stat bonus at long as they are in a companion slot (except the Seneschal who you automatically get as an advisor at the beginning of the game; he gives +5 to one of two stats). If you have favors with them you can usually trade them for other gains, like increasing DFP, reducing PTR, or teaching stats. Some companions will also teach you (ie, give +1-3 stats) in exchange for favors.

I don't have much advice yet. It's fun, but frustrating once your Action Points are used up. Once I get my Woods-Wise and Cunning high enough, I think I'll be able to open some new paths (such as exploring the actual story with the Chantry Door, or going hunting for Trophies). Anyone else playing?

Aha! Turns out you only need 3 of a specific item for the first part of the challenge. Once you collect 3 you get this:

Considering I'm still on the first day and already have 6 items, I think I'm on the right track. My freedom is still low (29), but I'm more worried about my Rumors of Revolution (62). I need one more favor to make the Purveyor of Teas an accomplice, but that'll drastically boost my Peril (28) and Rumors of Revolution. Can't afford the hit right now but I really REALLY want that sweet +20 Cunning boost. I did manage to get the Abbess as my lover; that opens the Counselor and Bodyguard positions. The Silent Hunter would be good for a Bodyguard as my Derring-do is only 25, but I'm not sure if I'd prefer the Outlaw for yet another Cunning boost. My base Cunning is now 49, but it still feels too low for some challenges. I've only encountered like 3 options that require Derring-do... Counselor spot will likely go to the Dowager or Guildmistress, as both give +20 Rulership (currently I have 44) which will be great for some challenges and to levy taxes for Bags of Royals.

In other news, the NDA has dropped and the first reviews are out. Every review I've seen has been at least an 8/10. One week to go!

It's super simple:

(1) Install Hola add-on to Chrome or Firefox
(2) Log out of Origin store if you were logged in
(3) Set Hola to Mexico, Go to Origin store. Make sure Hola server is working (the store will be in Spanish so it's obvious), if not, tell Hola to try again.
(4) Add Dragon Age: Inquisition to cart, check out
(5) When Origin asks you to log in, do not log in. Instead, copy page URL
(6) Turn off Hola
(7) Paste URL into new browser tab, continue with sale as normal

This way you're not sending your payment information via VPN nor are you ever logged in via VPN. I personally use Chrome for the Hola part and paste the URL into Firefox but that's just me being extra careful.

Because I'm still nerding out...

NDA has dropped and the reviews look awesome. Knight-Enchanter mage is the way I'm going to be going. Not only do you get magic from being a mage, it has one of the few healing spells (yes, it takes focus to use, but still...) and the melee lightsaber move gives you a barrier each time you use it. Heck yes.

For The Last Court: I still have 5 days left (well, it'll be 4 around noon today), and I'm plugging along well. All companion slots are full:
Counselor: Guildmistress (+20 Rulership)
Lover: Abbess (+20 Scholarship)
Accomplice: Purveyor of Teas (+20 Cunning)
Bodyguard: Silent Hunter (+20 Derring-do)

Market Day has been interesting. The rare cards unlock pinned cards that you can access at any time. My last Market Day gave me the option of His Dour Lordship, The Lord of the Forest, and the Iconoclast. These offer nice rewards but often take semi-rare resources like Bags of Royals or favors. But since they are pinned until you complete the quest you can complete them at your leisure. As a result, despite working on Hunting Trips and upping my dignity, I have 6 Secrets and 4 Trophies (I'd have 5 Trophies but I exchanged one more for a Silent Hunter favor, just in case).

I also started the Unsealed Chantry Door questline; only a few steps into it, but so far, so good. No failures. I stopped until I can lower my PTR some more. At one point I was almost to 70 Twilight, which was a bit frightening. I'm not brave enough to get PTR above 75.

I've done three Hunting Trips and I'm not quite sure if I get the hang of it. On the plus side, my Stats have made it so I haven't lost a hunt yet, though the final kill last time was only around an 80% chance IIRC. Last time I took the options to go deeper into the woods, which makes the hunt hard but the rewards greater. But despite doing it twice, I still only received one Trophy and used 5 or 6 turns. Not worth it. My plan for the Hunt from now on is to do them when I have 40+ Favors and 5+ turns available, and just try to complete them ASAP. Otherwise I'm just grinding clues, favors, dignity, prosperity (for Bags of Royals, for favors), and keeping PTR low.

Once I hit 15 VTS I'll probably focus more on the story than on getting ready for the visit, as I know at least I'll get a good ending if not the best one.

*Spoilers, hidden by tags, below!*

Seems like I've gotten the hang of the game by now; still have a few hours until I hit 3 Market Days left, and I have 31 combined total VTS. I've completed all the quests I had available, so now I'm just waiting for Market Day to get The Elusive Iconoclast or The Bereskarn hunt. Pretty sure the only other Market Day cards are just one-offs that give you heightened rewards. Not positive, however.

As for the quests (Market Day ones or Sealed Chantry), my thoughts:

Sealed Chantry: I recommend doing this questline later on, as it requires skill tests from all the skills at relatively high levels, and gives few rewards but a lot of plot. Once you get past the skill tests, make sure you have around 60 Clues so you can unlock all the dialogue options. I learned the hard way that if you leave to get more clues it costs 3 Action Points to come back... Turns out the Sealed Chantry hides a passage to an outdoor area where the Anchoress is: your great-aunt. She was "The shame of The Shame," an illegitimate child born between The Shame and a Chantry sister. She grew up as an outcast in the woods, very Witch of the Wilds style. She's an old woman now with very little etiquette, and at the end you can imprison her, banish her, or bring her home as a family member. There was an option to sell some of the items in the Chantry, which I did not do; other than that there are almost no rewards. It's implied that the Divine would appreciate it if you imprison her to repent of one of the shames of Serault, but instead I welcomed her as family.

Good Neighbors (His Dour Lordship): A good questline that unlocks a potential counselor (His Dour Lordship, gives +10 Cunning/Rulership). His favors are easy to get, costing (IIRC) only a bit of Dignity. However, he's the least fleshed-out companion, as he has no other value for favors and doesn't teach stat boosts. Your only options are gain a value, get clues (+8 for success), or make him a counselor. He will immediately give you 3 Viands when you select the Market Day card, which is nice. However, the questline itself can be difficult if it's your first day or two and you don't have a good handle on your stats: Three cards will show up randomly when you draw after getting this one; revolt at the glassworks, the Dowager gets poisoned, and some merchants get robbed. Your PTR will rise sharply at first, which is dangerous, and the Dowager will be unavailable until you save her. The rewards for each part aren't terrible; the hunt for the wyvern, for example, gives you 3 Trophies if you succeed. I think you also get some Secrets for sorting out the attacks. In the end it turns out His Dour Lordship hired a bard to commit all these seditious acts. I ended up arresting His Lordship, which made my Peril and Rumors of Revolution plummet, and returned the merchandise to the merchants, which made my Prosperity skyrocket by 40. You also lose him if you had him as a counselor, but I didn't. No idea what the outcome is if you let him go, but it seemed like a dumb idea to me. Make sure you have a lot of clues for the investigation, and several turns available for the hunt. Also I think a favor with the Dashing Outlaw helps for one of the challenges, but you might be able to use clues instead.

Petition from a Village Headsman (Lord of the Forest): My favorite Market Day card so far. You get a TON of secrets (9, maybe? Might be more), the lore is really neat and ties into the Legacy DLC from DA2, and it can mostly be done at your leisure. The drawback is that a few of the options are relatively pricey; you need to pay out several Bags of Royals and I used a favor or two (can't remember if the Bard needed one, but the Abbess did), as well as a few score of clues. Your PTR and DFP will also go up and down a bit, but it's less extreme than His Dour Lordship's questline. In the end I came to a grudging respect with the Horned Knight. We exchanged favors: I rescued the Errant Siblings, refused to give up the "murderer," told the Abbess not to build a road, paid to release the Bard, got invited to his party and received information about The Shame, and invited him to the Feast. Turns out that The Horned Knight is one of the main reasons The Shame was so... well, shameful. He's a spirit summoned by The Shame and left behind after he died. The only thing I didn't like is that his backstory and persona are more Celtic than Dragon Agey. The guy was all right in the end - very honorable. Reminded me a bit of Justice, in that if you follow his code, his actions make sense. Oh, and the Bard cheats on you during this questline if you're his lover; you can remove him or forgive him.

Morrigan: No idea what the endgame with her is yet. Each time I've had her card come up (4 or 5 times so far) I've selected a different option and received some small bit of experience in a stat. But that's about it. I think I have one or two options remaining. I would hazard a guess that she's in Serault to see if the Glassworks can repair the Eluvian, but I haven't been able to move the story ahead at all.

Carver: I mentioned before, Carver shows up at the beginning of the game, and you can call him out as an imposter, welcome him as a Templar or Grey Warden, or send him away. Since in my game Carver became a Grey Warden, I chose that and received 3 Secrets. Nothing else has happened, so maybe that's it?

It helps to remember which quests are "bad" no matter what, and which are "good." For example, A Visitation of Ravens/Strange Behavior in Seralt's Skies (Omens/Knight Requests an Audience) are awesome as a Scholar, because they guarantee -10 Twilight and +20 Prosperity. Whereas "You travel across a manor fallen on hard times" (The Fields/Baron Waits Impatiently) is always bad, because you have to give something good and end up with no net gains at all (unless you choose the health loss option, as health is pretty useless).

One bug I noticed: when your health hits 0 you get a non-Action Point event where you can heal up fully or heal up partially. Right now the full option is bugged: it takes away DFP like it should (I think about 17 each?), but instead of giving PTR, it takes them away too. It's an easy way to knock back your PTR if they get too high. It'll (hopefully) be patched soon, because right now if your city stats are high enough losing all of your health is a GOOD thing.

So as said, now I'm just killing time for three days (or until I can do another Market Day quest). Fun little game, but once you get a hang of it it's not too bad. I look forward to seeing the ending, as I doubt the Divine will be thrilled when she finds out I've invited a disgraced Anchoress/apostate mage to dinner, became friends with a forest spirit who very well may be/become an abomination, and threw one of my neighboring rulers in jail.

Anyone else taking a swing at it?

It's time-locked in that you get one more Action point every 20 minutes for a maximum of 20 at a time; and the game ends after 7 RL days. I've been fairly strict with logging in for the last few days (yep, woke up in the middle of the night last night to make sure I didn't hit 20), but since I'm already practically at the requirements for the best ending and still have three and a half RL days to go I imagine that you could just log in once or twice a day and still get the best ending.

It's a resource management game with DA lore behind it. The time lock mechanism is frustrating, but it also means you only need to put in maybe 30-60 minutes a day and you'll get the whole story by the time the week is over.

With the waiting on Action point mechanic, it does feel a lot like some Facebook games I played years ago. Or like Kingdom of Loathing. Actually, KoL is probably a good comparison... except that one actually had RPG mechanics and this one is just resource management.

So, another Market Day has come. I was killing time on Hunts (which actually give a decent amount of clues and are a good way to raise my Woods-Wise skill) and decided to pick up "The Elusive Iconoclast." So far, not thrilled. I've gained 2 secrets, failed a "Low-Risk" challenge where I used 3 authority, and my Rumors of Revolution went from around 15 to 100 over the space of about three turns. I've tried to turn this to my benefit by ignoring the pinned cards and trying to draw an Enlightenment Card (which has the choice to put down the rebellion... -50 RoR and +1 Secret if you succeed). No dice. Might be better off just finishing the questline as I'm guessing it will come with a major reduction.

I'm a little disappointed I didn't pick the other card I wanted, the bereskarn. Would have been more straight-forward, I bet.

Edit: Well, finished the questline. Disappointing ending. Basically the Iconoclast is out preaching how the Maker made everyone equal and it's not right for you to be a ruler while others roll in the mud. For the first offense, the kids who threw muck at the Dowager, I tried to be lenient. Oops. Lost favor with the Dowager, RoR rose. Got 1 secret. I forget the second and third ones, but one involved debating against a speaker in public using 3 Authority. Somehow I lost (88% chance to win, ugh), and gained something like 40 RoR. Finally captured the Elusive Iconoclast. She seems like she's just a fanatic. I didn't have the Scholarship to poison her (takes 80; I had 74) and execution was only a 60% success rate, so I investigated, found her guilty, and confined her to an Abbey. RoR dropped 20. And... that seems to be it. I might have messed up somehow, but this was the most disappointing Market Day card so far. I know the Purveyor of Teas has an option, but his card never came up so I never learned what it does. Lame. 2 Secrets for 80ish RoR seems like a waste.

Edit2: No new updates; have 44 combined VTS and I'm just killing time. Still showing as 3 Market Days before the Divine shows up.Finally pushed my Woods-Wise over 50 (53 now) thanks in no small part to consistently getting the Cottage card in my Hunts. Derring-Do is only 33+20, but it feels like many of the tests that require is have some penalty so it is often the most difficult challenge option. I was just thinking, there's a lot of good vocabulary in this game:
Hind: Female deer over 3 years of age; the female version of a stag.
Derring-do: Action displaying heroic courage
Viand: An item of food
Acerbic: (especially of a comment or style of speaking) sharp and forthright.
Anchoress: a female religious recluse.
Iconoclast: a person who attacks cherished beliefs or institutions.

... sometimes the dialogue feels almost more like an SAT prep class than anything else Smiley: tongue
