I've literally only played a bit but what I THINK I remember people saying is that, like any trilogy scenario, playing the first will enhance the latter two. But the 2nd is apparently structured so that you can play it without prior knowledge, and its combat systems are more intuitive and the controls are more reactive.

I've played some of the first one, but it fell victim to my Steam queue.

There's bound to be a Let's Play on Youtube, so that's an option.

What they said. Don't let playing the first game stop you from checking out the second if you end up disliking the first game. I hated 1 at first until I got the camera and controls figured out. But after sticking with it for a bit it was definitely a cool game.

No where near as polished and epic as 2 though.

I faced the same dilemma when I picked up TW2 back in... winter 2012? Perhaps that long ago. I was given the same advice - the first game is good for the story, but shows its age.

I also ended up reading some of the novels (which I believe were originally in Polish). The short stories I read were... interesting... but not fantastic. Very "story-of-the-week" format with revelations about Geralt's past being alluded to bit by bit.

TW2 was a game I never got far into, unfortunately. I died in the freaking tutorial. Now that I've had experience with Dark Souls I feel like going back to TW2 would be a refreshing change of pace! Probably my next game of choice after finishing Dishonored and its DLC.

Okay, thanks everyone for the feedback. I found the original for $5 on G2A so I picked it up and will give it a try. If I don't like it I'll just move on to the second one.
