ESO Drops SubscriptionFollow

ESO loses its subscription like everyone predicted. Uses the GW2 model now (buy to play, still have to purchase entry but no subscription after that). Kinda.

What's weird is they're offering a "subscription" for "DLC". There are going to be areas and quests not part of the base game, and not implemented yet, that you will have to buy a 30-, 90-, or 180-day pass for. Once the pass expires, you lose access to the content.

So... almost like GW2, but not quite.

Change happens starting in March.

Surprise Surprise (not really).

Has the game price itself come down?

Anyone playing this?

I tried it in beta and it was very dark on my computer. I tried all sorts of settings but just couldn't make it look decent enough to bother playing. I could see the mobs cuz they had a red outline around them, so i was in no danger of needless dying, but it wasn't pretty.

In a moment of sheer gaming panic this weekend (steam wasn't letting me in) I downloaded WoW.

I think the game is still at $60. I wish it had gone full f2p since I'm a huge Elder Scrolls lore nerd, and there's a lot in it that I really want to see. Not bad enough to pay $60 for, though.

If I can grab it on sale, I'd consider it.

I'm not a fan of this rent DLC thing, either.

I got my monies worth out of it. I thought it was fun, but it got grindy at the end. Well it's just pretty grindy throughout really.

I think this is one of the new planned MMO business models. Start out when hype train is highest with full price game + sub. Drop sub, lower base price, add freemium content. Drop base price completely. Find a stable population plateau to keep game profitable. Occasionally release new content within profitability margins or just let the game go until margins no longer met. Then shutter.

It's $12.50 from Gamesrocket. No idea about the store except that they recently gave away a free copy of some game I can't remember (The Journey - Chapter One?) so I had an account there. Didn't buy ESO though.

I get lots of isthereanydeal spam from them because they always have 10-15% off deals turning on and off.

Ya,I should go through and fix the email notifications but I have a lot of wish list entries and I only see setting them one at a time, not global.

General consensus I've seen is that the story is interesting, but it feels a lot like generic Vanilla WoW copy #18975 with a coat of Elder Scrolls paint. As a f2p title, worth checking out, but so not worth the subscription that it's not even funny.

But you can make a Bosmer with ******* antlers and I am all about that.

Meh, I fired Rift back up recently and I'm enjoying that (I still have "patron" time left when I purchased it a while ago). No desire to go back to ESO - Elder Scrolls will never be a multiplayer gaming experience in my eyes.

Agreed, honestly. I don't want it for the multiplayer. I'm going to grudgingly do the dungeons for the story and hope I never have to interact with the rest of the players again.

What I want are those sweet, sweet nuggets of lore. ESO has more lore books than any of the other Elder Scrolls games, and that little minutiae has me rabid and drooling for it. I'm a huge fan of the lore of the series, and this game has created an itch lasting for months now. In my brain.

I updated and logged back in as soon as it went free earlier this week. When I unsubbed from ESO it wasn't because I was sick of the game, I was still having a lot of fun, but I had too much work overload IRL and had to pull back on gaming. When I finally resubbed to something again, I went back to WoW, because WoW is easy to play for half an hour and then log off. With ESO I tended to get caught up and play for way longer than intended. But still. FREE! I sense much procrastination in my future.

And then when I logged in I discovered some fun stuff, as I hadn't been keeping up with the game. Class skills with stam morphs! Stamina builds are a thing! But most importantly, I had 1,000 free credits for the cash shop (no idea why) and THERE WAS A WOLFHOUND IN THERE!

I love that good games like Rift and ESO are just there to play whenever I want to. Makes them seem more like video games and less like lifestyle choices.

That's awesome that stam is worth something other than shield bash spam now. That was a huge limiter on build diversity before. I might pick this up again sometime but I got my plate full with game goodness in the souls world again currently.
