Cashiers probably either have sign up goals to reach or else it's as simple as catching hell if a supervisor hears them not asking. I assure you that the wage slave working the register at the drug store isn't asking for anyone's information out of personal interest or because she's "stupid".
I didn't mean "stupid" as in "mentally deficient", but as in "playing dumb". It's how they pretend that what they're doing is perfectly normal and reasonable whilst asking for personal information they have no real reason to ask for that kinda gets my goat. And yes, I totally get that they're told to do this. They know it, but they're not supposed to let the customers in on it. And usually, once I indicate that I'm not going along with it (and know it's complete BS), they are almost relived that they can share with the customer in front of them just how ridiculous and unreasonable the request is. Dunno, call it customer catharsis or something, but it does seem like the cashiers are more comfortable after I tell them no over that particular issue than if I go along with it. It's like they don't have to wear a mask anymore.
It's the employee/customer relationship equivalent of feeling free to fart in front of your SO. Sorta.
