I have a friend who has a dilemma right now.
A few weeks ago she was given a weapon and a sum of money (large for her but pocketchange for him) by the leader of the LS she is currently in. There was no mention of payback needed - it was a gift.
The leader has since found out she is going to be leaving the LS and he is none too pleased. However, she feels she needs to find a LS that better suits her.
So now she's trying to decide whether to keep the gifts or to return them since she will be leaving the LS.
Any thoughts on this?

Well...depends I would say.
I would if I still had the items and cash, but if the cash was gone I would try to send what I could. Just my own feelings, although I rarely accept gifts even from people who are close friends (offers to loan gil, spells, etc) unless they're gonna toss it anyway. I accepted money from various people when I started the game in an LS I'm no longer with, and it still pains me because I still owe them and so I'm slowly trying to raise the money to pay them back without affecting my leveling even though they've never mentioned it.
Then again the guy I owe money to is a decent person, if this guy is bein an asshat then I say keep it ^^

I say keep it in any case, gifts aren't meant to be returned. :o
I...being me...would return the items. I am a "pay-you-back" kinda person and detest hand-outs, so it would just wear on my mind.
Plus, not all people are totally just "thoughtlessly giving of themsleves." They expect, in the very least...appreciation. Tough to show appreciation when you're leaving an LS (I have dont it twice so that is not an issue). Just give the junk back. Easy come, easy go.

Has the gift-giver asked for the items in return?
As the recipient, I would probably ask that person if he/she wanted the items returned, just as a measure of politeness. I don't think entering/leaving an LS really would affect this sort of thing - I'd be just as untrusting of someone that I don't know whether or not they were in my LS.

No he's never asked for them back. And nothing was ever mentioned about giving them back or paying him back later.

I myself would keep them. You never know. The gift-giver might take offence having his gifts returned to him. Do you ask for receipts from the items you receive for your birthday or christmas or some other holiday?
Personally, I would return the items, but that is because I don't feel right accepting pricey gifts anyway. I would rather earn them. But if he has not asked for them back then don't return them. But you stated he isn't too pleased with her leaving so perhaps she is best off returning them to avoid future conflict with this linkshell.
i would say keep them. i am sure the idea of the gifts is to help this new person along in the game. takeing them back would counter that. and it would be like punishing them for trying a new LS. after all she can use both. its not like a guild
it reminds me of times way way back in DAoC. i would stand in the lowbie areas and pass out some gold coins. nothing to me. but it would last them 10 levels in gear. ofcorse they would blow it all on armor dye
