For the last many years, I have seen FFXI community to change (or decline, whatever word you decide to use), I have seen other online community to change as well -- mostly I am from anime fansubbing background, I saw changes there too.
There are pockets of good community in Vana'diel just as in IRC channels or blogs homes of fansubbers. It is all about hanging out the right person.
I myself is ready however to leave MMORPG, the reason is just take too much energy, patience, and time. I simply cannot do it anymore. A while ago there is a FFXIV thread in Immortality's site about people may "move on" or "try". I actually said I would try, but I think it would be better if I pass. There is a thread going on the main forum about Aion. I saw the box of the game in Best Buy yesterday, but I am passing it as well. There is a joke that MMORPG actually save RL bucks. I may be spending more money on booze or airline tickets/gas to visit places and friends.

Art for the sake of art itself is an idle sentence.
Art for the sake of truth, for the sake of what is
beautiful and good — that is the creed I seek.

not when there is nothing left to add,
but when there is nothing left to take away.
