New Player LookingFollow

Hello there, I'm a new FFXI player and I'm looking for a nice group of friends to play with. I want to grow strong with a nice and friendly environment. I would appreciate some pointers on what to do as right now, I literally listened to an NPC and ran straight out the gates to kill some monsters around Bastok ;) I am deeply fascinated with becoming a DPS type player, so please bare with any questions I have that may seem newby.
