If you check the crafting forums there are a lot of theories about HQ synths and how to enhance the chances of getting one. There are several consistent theories (please keep in mind this is a summation of what I have read, and is not meant to be construed as actual fact. Nobody, in fact, knows EXACTLY what all these factors do except SE):

1. To HQ more often, you should craft on a Full or New Moon

2. The day of the week matters. To summarize the most popular theories:
a) Crafting on the day with the same element as your synth=fewest breaks
b) Crafting on the day your synth element is weak against=more breaks, but more skill-ups.
c) Crafting on the day your synth element is strong against=more HQ synths, but less skill ups.

3. There is a theory that facing a certain direction enhances HQ chances. Each avatar has a certain direction in the constellation chart, so you should face in the direction fo the avatar that matches your synth.

4. The more you are above a recepie in level, the more common the HQ synths. This seems to cap at a certain point, which is about 50%.

For me theory 4 is the only one I can verify is at least close to accurate. I am woodworking 67, and I can HQ arrowwood lumber (a level 2 synth) about 50% of the time. These can be HQ 2,3 or 4. I have not noticed a significant increase in my HQs since I hit 50, which would seem to bear this out. I generally don't get too many HQs on a synth until I am at least 20-25 levels above the recepie. I'll see them, but they are pretty uncommon.

The others theories are interesting but I don't know exactly how much they play into the equation or not. They may have a lot of influence, they may have a little, they may have none. I do seem to notice more HQs using the days of the week theory than on the directional or moon theory, but I haven't written anything down so it may only be perception.

Hope this helps!

Well, if you REALLY want advice at crafting, you need to find official releases from SE. Nothing a player can tell you is garunteed to be true. This game has countless theories and speculation as to 'whats best', but unless its from the designers, its pure rumor. Though, its not always a bad idea to use the 'that many people can't be wrong' approach, but then, now many bragged they had unlocked Blue Mage and finally beat Bahamut Prime and can't wait to summon him when CoP was released, eh? Sometimes a 'guilty until proven innocent' look at things can save you some grief. Either way, its best to just test theories you hear and separate the good from the garbage. Keep records, too, the more records there are the more refined theories become.

Yes, I believe I made this clarifying statement in my post...hope I was clear that I was summarizing what I have read, not claiming it to be actual FACT.

Well after taking 2 crafts to lvl 60 and wood in the mid 40s

Heres what I can say about HQs. From my personnal experience.

11-31-51 Are the magic numbers. Those are the tiers to HQ rates. 51 levels above cap, you stand a very good chance of HQ 8/12 for HQs is not uncommon at that level.

Also you will rarely get HQs while levelling up. Its possible but consider it dumb luck. There is no big secret behind HQs, just skill skill skill. Some elements can factor in, like day and moon phase, but at the base its all skill.

Widenorg, that post wasn't a personal insult towards you >.>

Heh thanks for clarifying Shyfox...I wasn't sure if you were saying I was full of you-know-what ^^. But you are right to point out that players can't say for sure what positively affects crafting and exactly how. All I know about crafting is I know nothing...why I can't HQ a synth I am skilling on but can break a synth 50 levels below me is beyond my comprehension.

Peace be with you :)
