New Linkshell specifically to help peopleFollow

#52 Mar 01 2005 at 11:11 AM Rating: Good
I think a Website is an excellent idea as it would allow us, even when we can't help and nobody else is on, to sort of put a help request "in the queue" so we can try to address it when people are available. Maybe we could rotate who kept track of the help request log each day, and that person would be in charge of arranging help for that request. I certainly could take a day each RL week to do this. Just a thought.

A side note for Payitforward members: the boomerangs are WORKING. I have had 3 questions about "why do you have that boomerang in your bazaar" which allowed me to explain the LS and even recruit a new member, and 4 requests for help based on having that and my Payitforward mission statement in my bazaar message (see my post above). Even when not on the shell, you can be an active member!!!!!

gladly, I tried to do this a while ago but no one joined and everyone dropped the pearls as soon as they saw no one was on the LS...it was very sad and made me dislike LSs all together...so to know someone is going to do this makes me smile...a lot. Although (as I stated in a previous post) I may have to start my character over *cries* I will definately be interested in joining this LS ^.^
(i will be in Windy, that's where I am and if I have to start over, that's where I tend to do so....)

OMG.. it had been so long since I read the thread that I got the boomerang in my Delivery Box and just sat there puzzled. Who the hell sent me this, and why a signed Boomerang??? One very confused taru until I saw this thread again. Now I know what to do with it ^^

Phildo - np, if I see you around I'll send you a tell, as I said before been so long that I forgot the names of most people doing this. I know I saw you a few days back. I used to have a friend I called Phildo so it's a name that sticks out for me. Anyhow, talk soon.

I got my pearl on my Elvaan and Tarutaru from Phildo and Andi. I would love to craft anything for people and help them whenever possible. Looking forward to good times with this linkshell! (34.1 Smithing/21.1 Goldsmithing) :)

Thanks for the boomerang Andi ( ^_^)

I got sent two though - one from 'PayItForward' and one from 'Phildo' so if someone needs one, tell me their name and I'll send the second one their way.

BLM's at 23, and plan to get to 25 for the weekend so should be able to help in what way I can with my RDm35 (since it's my highest) from next week.

If I had worked in HTML, Java, CGI or anything in the past 2 years I would setup a website. However, I haven't touched HTML since I stopped designing websites for friends. =/ Over my spring break if I have some time I can try and setup a website, I can't promise anything though. It has been along time and my laptop is all I have at home.

What do you need done, I can probably help out website wise... since it's what I do ; ;
#60 Mar 05 2005 at 12:22 PM Rating: Good
Well, I think for a website what we most need is a common place people can check to see any events we may try to organize, or any requests for help. Something we could all post on, maybe like this forum. We are all on at different times, and this would be a way we can keep track of what is going on. I know this is not a primary LS for many of us, so we kind of have to find creative ways to keep the information flowing. Does that make sense Argonaut?

Yeah so just a forum and a calendar that dates can be put into and stuff. The hardest thing for me is if I was to help out and do this, if I should use my own forum script that I've been running for a few years now (example) or a generic phpBB script. Anyhow I know what you mean and it can be done.

I don't have any personal experience moderating one, but I have been in past linkshells that used proboards. It's not fancy but it seems simple enough to moderate.

From my experience you could setup several different forums on your proboard based on Mission/Quest/Other, etc. There's also a Calendar function available to list your events.

It's late right now so I haven't reviewed my info, but it seems like it might have the basic features you're looking for.

The only thing I have against freely hosted boards is the advertisments, alot will associate your site with stuff you don't want. Some sites I've been to have had IGE banners on there, not from them but the forum host. Plus the free hosts don't allow you to customize your board fully.

Hi all. Yes, I am getting a lot of interest in my boomerang (thanks to Andi) as well and have had several peeps tell me they want to join. I recommend they talk to Phildo or Andi.

We need to get something up where peeps can post what they need. As this is not our primary ls for most of us it is hard to just drop in and find out what is needed. I don't know how much a website would cost but if pretty inexpensive (as I think) we may be able to get people to contribute.

Anyway, Waiting for our first ls objective so I can start doing my part.

Hey all...just wanted to let you know Phildo will be out this week visiting his family, so direct all recruit interest to Andrinor for the time being (better tell em Andrinor--had one person recently tell me they couldn't find me under "Andi" o.O)

Also just wanted to volunteer to contribute to any website costs. Argonaut, any sense of what a site host would run us?

Keep helping everyone and see ya in the shell!

Andi

www.guildportal.com

This is a site that offers free webhosting aimed specifically for guilds. I use it for my Linkshell, the user format is awesome.

Only problem is that the URL for the site can be a little bit long. However if you go to www.cjb.net you can register for free a shorter URL.

Just as an idea of what the site could look like here is the URL to ours:

www.Refugeguild.cjb.net

Hope this helps!

*edit* Url issue

If you can spare a pearl I'm more than willing to help out. Right now I have a lot of free time on my hands as I catch my subs up and gather enough gil for a sniper,so I don't mind helping out when I can.

Hello,
This LS sounds like a great idea and I'd be willing to help out any way that I can. Phildo helped me with my Pld AF2 a little while back, I even scored my Pld testimony while we were doing it, so here comes the payback. I'll look you guys up next time I'm on(later tonight). Anyways I look forward to making lakshmi the best server it can be.

Just some info/updates:

Phildo is BACK (YAY!). Please make sure to drop into the LS and say wb to our founder ^.^

The new website is up thanks to Darkgoddess. Please head there and sign up for access, make a post, and lets get this really rolling.

Several folks have commented on the url length. I will have to leave this to the experts: I do not know how to shorten it. Suggestions?

Anyone who does not yet have a boomerang, please post and Phildo and I will ensure you get one. People are starting to notice these in our bazaars, and I get /tells on mine daily.

A quick Payitforward story: the other night I was done EXPing when I got a /tell from Galathiel asking if I could help someone unlock SAM. I went ahead and soloed the mobs, showed the guy how to get to Norg, and basically walked him through it start to finish. It was his dream to become a SAM you see, and I cannot tell you how great it felt to see him be so happy when he completed that quest. He commented on how wonderful people are on this server, and how when he gets to be HL he is going to spend his time helping others. You see...if WE put in the effort, we can make a difference in how this server works. We can make it a better place by putting ourselves out there to help others. It didn't take more than 90 minutes of my time, and I made the game for someone. We all can do this, and believe me it was the one thing I am most proud of accomplishing all week ^.^

Take care all and see ya in-game Smiley: smile

Andi
