I cant decide on a good craft to level. I have 1 million gil put away for this purpose, and I was considering woodworking, but I'd like to know what other people think. Basically I want to have a trade that can provide a steady income for me at some point.

Well, if your a mage woodworking isn't that helpful. Mines 62.7 and without a Lu Shang getting from 72-80 is impossible. Try Goldsmithing, or Blacksmithing. But it that doesn't work for you, you could always send it to me. =P

I agree with Jobberwocky. A mage deciding to do woodworking as a craft is not benficial for their job. A more rewarding is cooking since you need juices and pies to enhance your mp and also can provide you with a steady income since so many players need mithkabobs and pies. Woodworking for a mage is nice only when you'll be able to make elemental staves, but that's only when your woodworking is high enough and have more than 1 mil. So IMO, cooking is a good way to start for you.

I would also suggest fishing, but then again it's not a craft and not many people have the patience sitting down and looking at the screen for hours on end. >.>

Yeah, you need to make a profit, if you have that much gil put to it... you might wanna do something that could make you more gil in the long run... goodluck

In the long run, alchemy (sp?) may be best. You can get ethers and potions. And when you can make anima, i think there will be good money (since all the other high lvl carfts will use it). silence and invis potions also sell at AH. if you do take goldsmithing to the top, you can make beads, which you can give to a high lvl woodworker to make into the elemental staffs (and by the time you hit that, i can make you the staffs).
But yeah, take it from me, wookworking is not profitable in the begining. I spent 70k going 15 lvls in woodworking (w00t 28!). Hope I make that back one day >.<;

That's a good question. I was pondering the same thing myself, although, I only have about 500k to invest, not 1mil. I'm also not limited to just mage, or just melee as jobs, I play them all. I'm willing to spend the entire 500k to level the skill, but hope that when i've spent that money, the skill is useful enough & leveled enough that it can provide a steady (not necessarily heavy) income. Cooking is a needed & inexpensive option, but so many people cook, do we really need another?

Thanks avatar, for asking the question!
