POL update on XPFollow

#1 Apr 15 2005 at 1:29 PM Rating: Decent
I just got this off POL. I Dont know how many read this yet, But I found it interesting and kind of a good thing.

The number of experience points required to gain each level was originally calculated after considering players' effects on the world of Vana'diel as they progressed beyond the initial level cap of 50. However, a considerable amount of time has passed since the implementation of the final cap of 75, and players beyond level 50 no longer have the same influence on the balance of the game. After a close review, the FINAL FANTASY XI development team has decided to reduce the amount of experience needed for leveling up after reaching level 51 (levels 1-50 will remain the same, however).

The update will affect the following:

-Experience points lost due to KO.
Starting at level 25, experience points lost after being KO'd will be 8% of the amount needed to reach the next level. However, this value will never exceed 2,400.

-Currently accumulated experience points.
At the time of the version update, if a player's currently accumulated experience points exceed the number required for the newly adjusted level, that player's experience points will be reset to one point below the number needed to gain a level.

Woot! This has secured my decision to return in a few months once I've slowed down on WoW :)

I also noticed the new ballista area on there, that's pretty cool too. Now you can challange someone to a duel without a bunch of patriots interfering XD

I don't know why but I don't like the change regarding the decrease in the points required to level after 50. This is not fair to the other players that have worked so hard to get to 75 with the original requirements.

I also don't understand the SE comment about " players beyond level 50 no longer have the same influence on the balance of the game".

It all seems to play into the "make it easier to get to 75 and more people will stay".

I do like the change on the max point loss when KO'd (but that is a little bit hypocritical as it equates to the same as above just not to the extent).

Anyway, I was going to be very proud to have worked my way to 75 the hard way. Now...not so much.

Oh, don't be such a party-pooper orion. The original TNL's are universally agreed to be just plain wrong. So maybe the lv75's now are a bit mad that we have it easier now, but such is life! Every old guy on the face of the earth is always shouting "you kids today have it so easy blah blah blah".

And I don't see why you're so upset hitting lv75 is easier. It's still gonna be a LONG road. Maybe a bit shorter, but still long. You may not have as much personal satisfaction, but I for one aren't gonna have any less respect for your time and dedication.

Until SE posts something more descriptive... I can't really say too much. It won't be too bad if every level is reduced by 3-5k experience points... but if it's something drastic - I'm not sure.

With the saturation of Level 75 players at the moment, I'm not sure I understand why SE wants to speed up the process and have an even more saturated base of maximum level players. It's quite a b*tch trying to look for an EXP camp past 71 because options are so limited, and everyone clamours for the same spots. During popular times, my static PT has been left with no real alternative to level.

They should probably look into adding more mobs which are EXP material for that level range if they're gonna welcome alot more players to that level. It's quite sad, whenever I talk about FFXI to my RL friends, I never fail to mention that I believed that their levelling pace and system was a good challenge - unlike other more popular games at the moment. That might change, I guess.
