Hi all !
As I had some hard time figuring out what those focus bonuses mean I just thought I'd spare the info :)
In this case, a +18 does not mean a bonus in itself. Such a focus bonus represents the maximum level of your spells that will now cost less mana to be cast. For instance, with a +18 earth magic, any spell up to level 18 you cast (spell level, not character level) will be less mana expensive (sorry but I don't have the numbers).
Hope this helps ;)

ooops, forgot something ...

instead of "any spell up to level 18 you cast"
please just read "any EARTH spell up to level 18 you cast"

that better fits the example hehe
worthless??

well, the sorcerer staff of the imposter is ok, but like the name suggests, it is mainly for a sorcerer. i could care less about the dps, i havent meleed since level 7 or so. everything i fight can kill me in 3-5 hits. i want the magic focus levels and the mana boost. :)

Excuse me, but there's very little documentation on this subject, so HOW is one supposed to learn EXACTLY what a focus bonus is at ANY level when the exact effects are not in either the manual or the FAQ, and no one on any forum can seem to agree on exactly what they do.

I've heard the following:
Your baseline spell effectiveness is affected by your spec level - You do 125% damage consistently if your spec level is at or above the level of the spell, and variable damage if your spec level is below. Does focus bonus have any effect on this?

You have reduced mana costs if the spell you cast is below the focus bonus given by the staves. (I.E. a with a +10 stave, you get reduced mana for spells less than Lv10)

Things seem inconsistent. So is the +10 (or in the case of this item, +18) starting at 0 or your current spec level? Does it affect mana usage, damage, or both? In the case of a theurg, what effect does it have on spells such as pet summons and BTs, which both seem to have "fixed" results and rather than consuming a number of points of power, consume a percentage.

I'm a mixed earth/air Theurg. The spells I'm primarily concerned about are my pet summons and my air nukes, both within my spec line. (So the spell's level will ALWAYS be at or below my spec level) - Do I get any benefit from having additional levels added on to earth/wind, or when I'm buying one of those "staff of earth/wind/ice" staves, should I go for an Ice staff so that my baseline spells in Ice are actually useful? (i.e. my roots NEVER seem to take hold because I have no points in ice.)

I do not believe that damage is effected by the focus bonus. I have a focus bonus of 18 in a line I have only the first level spell in, and when I cast it on a creature that is 20 levels lower than I, at level 3-5, the creature still only takes 1 to 2 points of damage.

I can cast my main spells with what seems like less of a power cost. I am 24. I have a focus of +21 lvls on my main stat. I can still cast my 23rd level spells, and they do major damage and consume minute amounts of power.

Since the focus bonus says +21 lvls, I assume it means 24 + 21 = 45. So my casting strength is 24, my power consumption is 45th lvl, my casting damage is 24.

Now if it gives a +3 to spec, that means I would cast with a damage and strength level of 24+3=27.

Therefore, when I cast at a lvl 24 creature, I have an attack rate/strength and damage of 27th lvl, and I conserve power as a lvl 45th would.

It's a nice staff, but if you get lucky in Keltoi and grab an imposter staff, this is kinda worthless. :\
either way....

Only matters for damage type. It's crushing, but you need staff skill to weild it.

The type of weapon shown on the item icon is crush weapon.
You posted as required skill Thrust.

Now I'm confused, it's thrust or crush.
That's important because of the stats that determins the damage.
