Final Fantasy XI Servers Temporarily Offline

In the wake of the March 11th earthquake in Japan, power companies have asked for cooperation with power conservation throughout the country. To assist in this conservation, Square Enix has announced that the Final Fantasy XI servers will be shut down. The downtime is estimated to be approximately a week, and players will not be billed for the April billing cycle.

As much as i agree in helping out japan, i read an article in the NY times and it stated....

"Wealthy Japan is not impoverished Haiti. And many groups are raising money without really knowing how it will be spent — or even if it will be needed," the New York Times reported. "The Japanese Red Cross, for example, has said repeatedly since the day after the earthquake that it does not want or need outside assistance. But that has not stopped the American Red Cross from raising $34 million through Tuesday afternoon in the name of Japan’s disaster victims."

The Reuters column said: "Japan is a wealthy country which is responding to the disaster, among other things, by printing hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of new money. Money is not the bottleneck here: if money is needed, Japan can raise it."

Just thought i would share this.

I want SE to take my monthly subscriptions to put towards their relief effort until they are back on their feet. The game can wait, their current situation is more important right now!

ihave no issues paying a month to help out and also like the idea is you donate you get an in-game prize. but also thinking if power becomes an issue for a longer time than expected, could the severs be moved for a short while and set-up in somewhere like the US. Or would that be too big of a move w/ the situation going on there? i dont want to sound self-ish or that i dont care. just wondering if its possible as i dont deal w/ or have ever seen large amounts of servers.

A free month is great, but I would also give my subscription cost still if it would go towards helping out in Japan.

It sounds like people want the servers left on and their monthly charge to go to relief. While it may sound noble at first, the reason for taking them offline is power conservation, not money (although I'm sure that's needed as well). I would rather they have enough power to keep the necessary things for a country like theirs operating than a game server online.

"What if" they kept the servers up, but the power consumption was JUST enough to push everything over the edge, and the whole country blacked out?
"What if" they turned the servers offline, yet STILL charged you and kept it?
"What if" they turned the servers offline, still charged you AND put all profits directly to relief?

That last "what if" is feasible, yet YOU have the choice to do it. Quite simple really, take what your monthly charge would have been, and donate it yourself.

Just sayin -.o

I think the general idea was to donate next months subscription to help out Japan. If the power needs to be out for the next 3 months, than so be it. I have already donated to the Red Cross at Redcross.org.

i agree, i don't want a free month..take it and give to those who need it and again i'm sure everyone within the gaming community would offer their support too in the hard times coming to Japan. A truely devastating time...

Instead of SE letting players have a free month why not still charge for april but put that fee they get to help those that need it.I am sure a lot of people wouldnt mind doing what they can to help and like the other post says its a small sacrifice.

Best of luck to the Japanese in the effort to rebuild after this disaster. A week of FFXI is a small sacrifice for some of us who are mostly unaffected by this.
