In the past, lesser demons conducted their dark rituals here. Wild hordes of them would meet on the barrow, until the Council of Varanas and the Eye of Wisdom intervened, purging the area of evil spirits with exorcism and force of arms.

This zone can be roughly divided into two regions. First, the newbie area south of Logar. This includes Pioneer's Colony, Pioneer's Mine, Hidden Valley Mines, Helen's Farm and the Myconid Farm. All mobs in this region are between levels 2 and 6. Second is the remainder of the zone, north and west of Logar. Here the mobs range from 7 on up to the low teens, with higher level mobs in the deeper cave tunnels, of course.

The word “howling” in Howling Mountains does not refer to a murky landscape. Once, this region was a meeting place of lower demons. The Barrow especially was a venue for the wild hordes.

On certain nights, the demons performed bizarre sacrificial rituals in the Barrow’s monumental stone formation. The screams from the sacrifices echoed throughout the region, and the area was later called the Howling Mountains. Some years ago, the Council of Varanas and the Eye of Wisdom cleansed the Howling Mountains with great armies of men and mages.

When the first humans settled there, the howling had silenced. Since then, travelers and adventures see the Howling Mountains as an open and unthreatening pasture. Nonetheless, the surrounding mountains and spiky stone formations can instill a slight feeling of eeriness.

Points of Interest

Hidden Valley

Hidden Valley got its name from its hidden location. In all four directions, towering mountains surround this deep-set region, which is why Hidden Valley was discovered only after the adventure guild Silvershadow began looking for the sources of different bodies of water.

In addition to a spring, Silvershadow detected traces of ore. To mine the ore, the Council of Varanas founded Pioneers Colony.

Pioneers Colony

The Council of Varanas built this mining base nestled in the tranquil backdrop of the Howling Mountains. With its clear lake, picturesque waterfall, proud forests and newly discovered veins of ore, Pioneers Colony is rich in both beauty and raw materials.

A small mine to the west of the village is the newest excavation area in the region. When mushroom-beings suddenly appeared in great numbers, Silvershadow sent out many young adventurers to deal with them and help with the mining so the region might prosper.

Hidden Valley Mine

After the founding of Pioneers Colony, Hidden Valley Mine yielded a steady supply of ore for years. However, it did not take long before a band of goblins launched a surprise attack. They even brought cave crabs with them as if to publicly announce the ore was now theirs.

Due to the goblins’ attack and the crabs’ furious digging, the mine’s stone walls became loose. That was when the humans decided to abandon the mine to focus on the ore vein to the west of the settlement. This was a temporary measure until all goblins and cave crabs could be driven away.

Helen's Farm

Helen (Ggl) operates a small farm in the Howling Mountains. As well as breeding cows, the peaceful peasant woman also plants vegetables. For the neighboring settlement of Logar, she is an important supplier of day-to-day foodstuffs. Even though young bears and wolves near the farm worry Helen, she does not intend to strengthen her defenses. All she wants is to live in harmony with her surroundings.

Crushed Plain

This landscape links the Barrow to the Moon Spring. The boulders and rocky debris of the Crushed Plain give the area its name. The Crushed Plain serves as an important transportation intersection from the Howling Mountains to faraway outskirts. A guard squad set up a camp near the area to ensure the safety of passing travelers.

For the past couple of years, Logar has become more and more famous. Since the Council of Varanas decided to exploit the nearby mines, humans have performed some great wraith expulsions with help from the Eye of Wisdom. After the area was safe for human settlement, a group of highly trained citizens were chosen to make the new region accessible.

Their leader was called Logar. In the battle against the demons, Logar decided to protect his companions by sacrificing himself, falling alongside the demons he fought. As a reminder of his heroic deeds, the settlement later founded bore his name. Logar’s younger brother is now the mayor of this town.

Logar has a great windmill that grinds corn from neighboring farms. Because of the windmill's importance in the everyday lives of Logar’s citizens, it’s also the town’s landmark. It is common knowledge among all travelers that when the windmill can be seen, Logar lies directly ahead.

Moon Hills

The magical Moon Hills are a plateau of limestone cliffs that emit billowing clouds of steam. A long time ago, a wanderer travelling at night saw the reflection of the moon in the waters of a spring. He thought he might find treasure, but the moonlight guided him to this place, which is now called Moon Spring.

There is another magical relevance to this place: When the Howling Mountains were still the home of lower demons, they did not dare venture into Moon Hills. It is rumored this may be because of a mighty enchanted creature dwelling in Moongorge, which lies deep in the mountain range.

Moongorge is a steep vertical vale that water carved out of the limestone and is situated close to the reservoir where the water flows. On the inside, Moongorge is full of stalactites and stalagmites, while the turquoise water flowing there reflects violet light spots. The touching atmosphere and outlandish beauty of the scene resemble a cathedral.

According to legend, Moongorge is home to a mighty being, so terrifying that even demons fear it. No one has ever dared gone into Moongorge to take a glimpse at the creature.

Sevaida Woods

This wild forest is east of Logar. In the ancient language, “Sevaida” means “Power of Aeons.”

A bard, accompanied by the mayor of Logar once came to this forest, and when he saw the Dead Tree with its cave deep in the woods, he was deeply touched and praised it as a symbol of ancient and mighty power. For that reason, the mayor proposed to call this place Sevaida Woods.

Dead Tree Cave

In the Sevaida Woods stands a towering white weathered tree trunk with a natural opening. This hole is linked to an underground cavern. Just as the mysterious environment gave birth to this strange plant, it also created other strange life forms.

In this cave, Logar fought the spider demon Pirlanok. After Pirlanok was defeated, legend says he was banished into the white trunk, where he drinks the power of the forest and awaits his resurrection.

The Barrow is an elevated place framed by stone columns. The slanted remains of the columns and great boulders are everywhere — much like in the Crushed Plain. Demons performed their sacrificial rituals at the ancient, monolithic stone formation is at its center.

Barren Caves

The Barren Caves once were a breeding ground for demons in the Howling Mountains. After the demons’ annihilation, the caves were abandoned. Now, they are considered cursed. Most people avoid them at all costs, but lately, a group of nearby kobolds started to move and claimed ownership of the Barren Caves.

Nobody knows why the kobolds began to act, but some suspect they are looking for treasures and magical objects left by the demons.

In the middle of the Barren Caves is a portal to deeper Elite-filled instanced dungeon also called the Barren Caves.

Pioneer's Mine

Not very old and not very deep, the Zinc Ore rolls steadily out of the tunnel.

Myconid Farm
